Magnificent country house and park with an internationally important art collection
The vast late 17th-century mansion is set in a beautiful 283-hectare (700-acre) deer park, landscaped by 'Capability' Brown and immortalised in Turner's paintings.
Inside, the house contains the National Trust's finest collection of pictures, with numerous works by Turner, Van Dyck, Reynolds and Blake, ancient and Neo-classical sculpture, fine furniture and carvings by Grinling Gibbons.
The servants' quarters contain fascinating kitchens (including a copper batterie de cuisine of more than 1,000 pieces) and other service rooms.
Coming soon: Mr. Turner – an exhibition
10 January - 11 March 2015
This January, a major Turner art exhibition featuring over 30 pieces on loan from major collections, is set to open at Petworth House, West Sussex.
The show, Mr. Turner - an exhibition, has been inspired by Mike Leigh’s award-winning film, Mr. Turner, filmed in part at Petworth House and Park.
Pieces in the Exhibition Gallery include major loans of Turner’s paintings in oil and watercolour, rarely seen portraits of Turner, such as John Phillip’s touching late watercolour – possibly the last painted image of the artist before his death – and CW Cope’s oil sketch, one of the very few visual records of Turner at work. There will also be the first showing of a painting by 19th-century artist Alexander McInnes, discovered on the BBC Antiques Roadshow.
Alongside the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to to view 20 extraordinary Turner paintings in their natural location inside the Mansion House, in addition to a visit to the Artist's Studio (not normally open to the public) used by Turner and other artist-guests in the early 19th century.
There will also be a selection of props and costumes on display from the film, as well as paintings created by Timothy Spall in preparation for his role as Turner.
