With 20 miles of towpaths, there is lots of walking to be done for anyone who is intrigued by the history and complex landscapes of the Wey Navigations. In some parts urban and built up, in others gliding through pasture and woodland, glinting past rural scenes, echoing its industrial past – there is something for everyone on our do-it-yourself walks.
In the 19th-century this was a thriving wharf, with over 20 buildings spread over ten acres from Godalming Town Bridge to Catteshall lock. There was a stonemason’s yard, coal pens and a swingbridge on each bank. The towpath was extended to the road when the swingbridge was demolished. The only building that survives is the barn, dating to 1768.
