Refreshments in Burghclere
After an enjoyable few hours spent admiring the chapel paintings, relaxing in the gardens, or meandering round the country lanes of Burghclere on our Stanley Spencer trail, you may feel that a nice cup of tea or a bite to eat might be just the thing to round off your visit.
Whilst we have no facilities on site, the traditional charms of the Carpenters Arms pub (Not National Trust) are conveniently situated just 50m (55yds) from the chapel. Food is available at lunchtimes and evenings, and coach parties or groups of 10 or more visiting the chapel can book afternoon teas outside of these times direct with the pub on 01635 278125.
Slightly further afield is the luxurious hotel and restaurant the Carnarvon Arms (Not National Trust). Just 0.9 miles (1.5km) away from the chapel, and even closer to Highclere Castle (more famous in recent times as Downton Abbey, and not National Trust) it makes the perfect destination for those wishing to combine a visit to the two properties in one daytrip.
For the garden lovers amongst you the historic Swan Inn (Not National Trust) in the pretty hamlet of Newtown, is roughly 1.24 miles (2 km) north of the chapel, and boasts a picturesque cottage style garden with babbling stream in which to enjoy your refreshments.

As an alternative to the local pubs, you're very welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy in the beautiful setting of our wildflower orchard or on our front lawn.
Treat yourself

The chapel has a small but choice selection of National Trust goods for sale, as well as a good range of Stanley Spencer merchandise to choose from.
