The Central Hall is an 18th century space designed by Sir John Vanbrugh as the main function room for Seaton Delaval Hall. As a result of a fire in 1822, all of the three floors above have been destroyed, exposing the wonderful design with fireplaces apparently hanging in mid-air.
The floor is black and white marble, and there are some lovely full-size statues around the walls which represent the arts.
Extensive and essential building works will be starting in summer 2011 and are expected to last for two to three years. As a result, the Central Hall, and other parts of Seaton Delaval Hall, will not be available for weddings and other events during this time, but the Hall will remain open for visitors to come along and see this conservation work in action.
