If you're planning a group day out or tour, we've pulled together answers to some frequently asked questions.
Who do I contact to make a group booking?
All bookings must be made in advance directly with the individual properties in advance and confirmed in writing. For all contact details you can search for a property geographically.
Are there any group discounts available?
Properties may offer a discount based on the size of your group, this is at their discretion so please check with the property at the time of booking.
Who is eligible for free entry?
Registered tourist board guides (on production of a valid badge), coach drivers and tour leaders escorting groups of 15 or more. National Trust members also receive free entry, so it is at your discretion whether to refund the entrance fee to members if you have included it in your package – this is not refunded by the National Trust. Members must bring their current membership cards with them to avoid paying the full group rate. How do I pay for a group visit?
Payment must be settled with the individual properties and confirmation of the method of payment made at the time of booking. Vouchers are accepted at most of our larger properties.
What if I have to cancel?
If you are forced to cancel your group booking, please give the property as much notice as possible. Check the property’s cancellation policy at the time of booking as in some instances a cancellation fee may apply.

Can groups visit out of hours?
Many of our properties offer out-of-hours tours for groups to add atmosphere to a particular tour, or go behind the scenes to discover areas not normally open to the public. An extra charge will sometimes be made by the property concerned. For information visit our online property search.
Are groups well catered for?
Make time in your itinerary for morning coffee in a pretty courtyard; a delicious home-cooked lunch made from local, seasonal produce in an historic dining room, or afternoon tea in a delightful stable-setting. Anything else I should know now?
- Photography: We welcome amateur photography out of doors at our places and photography without flash is permitted indoors at the discretion of the Property/General Manager. Please speak directly to the property for any special requests.
- Footwear: Please bear in mind that the wrong footwear (e.g. stiletto heels and deeply ridged soles) can be very damaging to floors and carpets. Plastic slippers are provided for visitors with unsuitable footwear where necessary.
- Large bags: At some properties visitors are asked to leave large bags at reception to protect furniture and contents from accidental damage.
- Timed tickets: Timed tickets sometimes operate at properties during busy periods to make the flow of visitors more even. All visitors are required to use them to ensure better viewing conditions and minimise wear and tear.
