An exhibition of contemporary art has been unleashed at Attingham Park.
‘House of Beasts’ curated by Shropshire-based Meadow Arts, highlights the importance of Attingham’s animal population past and present, and its part in the history of the estate.
The exhibition explores the changing nature of man’s relationship to animals through the years and, by mingling with Attingham’s historic collections, also creates stimulating juxtapositions of the old and new.
New commissions by artists including Des Hughes, Ruth Claxton, Tom Gallant, Tessa Farmer, Susie MacMurray, and Sophie Molins, have been directly inspired by Attingham’s history - drawing upon its rich collections. The exhibition also includes a wealth of existing works by high profile and regional artists.
The exhibition explores evolving human relationships with animals, including emotional ties to pets, antagonism to pests, and admiration and curiosity for birds and butterflies.
The exhibition supports a three year partnership between the National Trust and Arts Council England to promote contemporary art at National Trust properties.
‘House of Beasts’ appears in the stables, mansion and parkland until July 2012.
