An new exhibition inspired by the National Trust's Brimham Rocks is now on display at The Hepworth Wakefield.
British painter, Clare Woods has produced a series of works, specially commissioned, that will appear in the gallery from now until Sunday 29 January 2012.
Measuring up to 10 metres long and six metres high, Clare Woods' works respond to the architectural scale of the gallery spaces and explores the work of 20th century British artists who share her interest in the landscape and natural forms.
Visually ambiguous, disturbing and claustrophobic in their detail, Woods’ large-scale works transcribe what she sees as magical elements of the landscape, such as rock formations, natural pools and twisted vegetation.
She uses abstract and figurative details that are united by overlying webs of paint and multiple layers of enamel to create luscious, reflective surfaces on aluminium.
Simon Wallis, Director of The Hepworth Wakefield, said:
'Clare’s exhibition will explore the Yorkshire landscape and particular works from our permanent collection. Using photographs taken at Brimham Rocks and Ilkley Moor as a starting point for her paintings, Clare’s work exploits her fascination with the elemental power of the landscape and our emotional relationship to it.
I’m sure that this new exhibition will have a particular resonance with our local and regional audiences, who have the opportunity to see exciting new landscapes inspired by the stunning terrain of the region, from one of Britain’s rising talents.'
The Hepworth Wakefield is open Tuesdays - Sundays and admission is free.
