Crystal clear Wastwater lakeshore

General information

Wasdale, Eskdale and Duddon are a vast area of upland fells, valleys, mountains, rivers and the deepest lake in England - Wastwater. Britain's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, can be climbed from Wasdale Head.

Wasdale is home of 'Britain's favourite view' - looking up Wastwater towards an amphitheatre of mountains.

Visitor facilities - parking

There is an 'honesty box' car park at Overbeck on the shore of Wastwater, and a pay and display car park at Wasdale Lake Head, the beginning of the route up Scafell Pike. Informal parking options are available but very limited, including in lay-bys and on Wasdale village green – please do not park in passing places or obstruct traffic.

Visitor facilities - other

There are very basic and limited temporary toilet facilities at Wasdale Head village green and Lake Head car park. While we make every effort to maintain these, heavy overnight use causes problems – please use other facilities where possible.

Planned facilities

We're currently planning to improve our visitor facilities - watch this space. Installing permanent toilets in this highly sensitive location is complex and costly, so please bear with us as we go through our rigorous planning and fundraising process.

Three Peaks visitors must use the 24 hour parking and toilets at Lake Head.
