Trust New Art connects people to places through contemporary art and craft.

Come and explore our programme of exhibitions, events, artists’ residencies and commissions which offers new experiences at National Trust places. We have been working in partnership with Arts Council England since 2009.

The 2012 programme offers the widest variety of events so far for Trust New Art.
In addition to established events such as the Tatton Park Biennial in Cheshire in May, highlights for the 2012 Trust New Art programme include:

Five properties hosting work from the Arts Council Collection, including the spectacular 'Field for the British Isles' by Antony Gormley on display at Barrington Court, Somerset. Others locations will show works by artists including: Tacita Dean, Tracey Emin, Susan Philipz, Yinka Shonibare and Graham Sutherland.

  • 'Garden of Reason' at Ham House in Richmond, which will see the 17th- century gardens take centre stage with sculptures, installations and new films.
  • ‘Sinopticon’, a collection of works from international artists, including Grayson Perry, Gayle Chong Kwan and Ed Pien at Saltram in Devon and other Plymouth venues, exploring the property's chinoiserie collections and how the cultures of East and West interact today.
  • ‘Silver Studio Today’, with artist-silversmith Miriam Hanid in residence at Ickworth in Suffolk in association with the Goldsmiths' Company
  • Glenn Brown will be exhibiting his striking paintings at Upton House in response to the well-regarded collection of ‘Old Masters’.
  • Edmund de Waal will create a series of ceramic installations at Waddesdon Manor, presenting his take on memory and family, drawing on his book ‘The Hare with Amber Eyes’ which refers to the Rothschild family.
  • ‘The Residents’ gives Tris Vonna-Michel the opportunity to live in the 18th-century pleasure grounds at Gibside and make work that will be exhibited at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

Background
Trust New Art developed through a three year partnership between the National Trust and Arts Council England to inspire people of all ages to see and enjoy National Trust places in a new way through the eyes of established and emerging contemporary artists.

Artists are supported to make work that resonates with its unique surroundings. The families that owned the great houses in our care collected and commissioned high-quality contemporary art of their day – and some still do. We want to continue this legacy. By presenting unforgettable creative responses to our houses, gardens, coastline and countryside, our current supporters can experience our places in new ways, while others will visit for the first time.
