Our bakery table is groaning with homemade cakes and scones

A visit to our homely café is the perfect way to round off – or begin – your time at Wordsworth House and Garden.

Choose from a laden bakery table of locally made traditional and seasonal treats, ranging from sticky gingerbread, Borrowdale teabread and Victoria sponge to luscious pies and cakes made with our own heritage apples.

We also have delicious cream teas – the scones are freshly baked in our own kitchen every day – and gluten-free chocolate and pecan brownies.

If you prefer something savoury, there's hearty soup served with thick wedges of brown bread. Other options include Morecambe Bay potted shrimps or cream cheese with garden herbs, served with oatcakes and edible flowers.

Alternatively, a cheese scone with Snecklifter chutney – inspired by an 18th-century Cumbrian recipe – should hit the spot.

Our pots of tea and cafetiéres of coffee can be enjoyed with cows’ or soya milk, cream or lemon, or you might like to try a glass of refreshing fruit pressé.

If the sun’s shining, a takeaway tea or coffee with a scone or slice of cake will make a perfect impromptu picnic in the garden – we can even lend you a rug.

The café is open from Saturday to Thursday every week (closed Friday) from 10.30am to 5pm, with last orders at 4.30pm. You don’t have to visit the house and garden to come in, but we hope you will.
