Children's guide

Using our charmingly illustrated guide, follow the footsteps of The Workhouse characters Mary, a pauper mouse and George, the Master’s cat to take you around the building. A great way to explore The Workhouse with the family.

Children can pick from one of four new trails which are based on real workhouse characters.

Family checklist

  • Pump a bucketful of water
  • Sniff carbolic soap
  • Pick oakum
  • Find Reverend Becher
  • Try writing on a school slate
  • Try out a straw mattress
  • Try a nightshirt on for size
  • Dress up as a pauper
