I've always been drawn towards the National Trust and spotted the Community Learning Volunteer vacancy at Houghton Mill while browsing the website.  I'd just given up full-time office work and wanted to do something that interested me in a completely different environment, so I was thrilled to get involved.

My starting point was finding out all about the history of the mill and getting my head around the workings of the machinery, before translating that into a interesting story for visitors.

Learning so much

Being part of a small team, my role is really varied.  I organise and lead school group visits, make bread rolls and scones with visitors on our new fun baking days and also help put together displays and hands-on events.

The fun part is interacting with visitors, finding out what interests them and sharing their excitement at discovering this 'hidden gem' of a place. My aim is to help make it come alive for them.
