Saving Saltram's Saloon

One of the finest surviving Robert Adam ceilings and arguably the most important English carpet in the National Trust’s care will be expertly restored to their former glory, and we need your help.

Saving the Saloon

Almost 250 years of wear and tear have taken their toll on the Robert Adam designed Saloon. The ceiling and carpet are in a very fragile state and require urgent conservation treatment. Conservators will be looking after the carpet and will add support to the linen threads; remove damaged areas and infill stitching by hand to match the original colours. While specialists have started work on the plasterwork, they will repair the ceiling’s paint and plaster, filling cracks and retouching.

  • This year we're celebrating 60 years of caring for Saltram and the Saloon
  • It is going to cost £292,000 to conserve the ceiling and carpet
  • The ceiling and carpet were crafted over 250 years ago and designed to mirror each other
" It’s thanks to the Wolfson Foundation’s generosity that we were able to start this vital work saving the Saloon. As a charity we rely on donations alongside members and visitors to help us look after Saltram for ever. This fundraising appeal will help us secure the funds needed to conserve and keep this unique room open for generations to come. "
