Bringing history to life

We aim to excite and inspire young minds through hands-on activities, fun and exciting workshops and costumed interpretation. We believe adults and children learn best when their imaginations are captured and history is brought to life.

Education group membership

Help your school or education group to make the most of the amazing National Trust sites in your area with Education Group Membership. This allows your school or group to enjoy unlimited visits for a full year and at Beningbrough you can book to attend one of the workshops that are offered free of charge when you're a member.

The programmes on offer

We currently offer a range of National Curriculum linked programmes making the most of the historic spaces, garden, parkland and collection.  We've done the planning so the away day from school is not only relevant but fun and inspiring. Many visitors today still remember coming on a school education trip when they were younger.

Creative writing

New for 2017 is an exciting schools creative writing programme. Finding inspiration in the architecture, surroundings art and the people of the hall, pupils can learn and develop a variety of creative writing techniques, resulting in a portfolio of collaborative work to take away.

The day comprises both structured exercises and free-writing activities and will include opportunities to share and perform work.

Pot, plot, park and plant

Our garden workshop invites children to have fun in the outdoors and learn about what grows around them. They can have a go at potting and learn about the challenges involved in growing your own food.

Making faces

‘A picture paints a thousand words’ and in this session children use the National Portrait Gallery collection to become ‘portrait detectives’ to shed light on some surprising stories behind the art.

Below stairs

This is a fun introduction to life as a Victorian servant. Children can test their skills through hands-on activities and discover the contrasts between the lives of those above and below stairs.

Higher and further education

With strong links already established at both of the universities in York, our tailored higher and further education programmes can include talks, tours and professional development days.

Informal learning for families and adults

Artrageous

‘Artrageous’ family craft workshops are a regular feature in the Beningbrough calendar and are a great opportunity for children to get creative. Most are free and if there is small charge for specific workshops there will always be a free option. See the what's on page for details of the next workshops.

Photography workshops

We host a series of photography workshops for adults. The experts at Going Digital help you to get off auto mode and make the most of your digital camera. Practice your close-ups on the flora and fauna in the gardens and your landscapes on the atmospheric parkland.
