Learning through art at Beningbrough

If every picture tells a story… then pull up a chair, for Beningbrough and its walls have many stories to tell.

Making faces

Learning how to unlock the stories contained within Beningbrough’s national collection of over 100 portraits from the National Portrait Gallery forms the backbone to this arty day’s workshop. Your class discover how to become portrait detectives learning how to unpick and decode the stories behind the people in the pictures.

Creativity with art

Observing the five elements of a portrait; background, stance, expression, props and costume – we look at techniques used by artists and the process of commissioning a portrait. It’s surprising what can secrets can be unlocked, if you know how.

Focus is then drawn to the pupils and what story their portrait would tell before creating their own self-portrait with step-by-step guidance. Pupils get to take their portraits away, to hang in their own homes to mark their own story of a very special day.
