Volunteering for the National Trust in York

Volunteers in Beninbrough's walled garden

Make new friends, learn different skills, work in amazing places all the while knowing that you're supporting a great cause – these are just some of the fabulous reasons to try volunteering in the new year. And at Beningbrough, Goddards and Treasurer’s House we have plenty of rewarding opportunities to consider.

Join the gardening team

With three beautiful gardens, all the properties are looking for green fingered volunteers. If you love being outdoors and want to get hands-on, come and help the team with everything from weeding and pruning to edging and planting. At Treasurer's House we've been awarded a Yorkshire in Bloom award for the last four years, all thanks to the hard work of the staff and volunteers.

Inspire the next generation

At Beningbrough, we have a busy schools programme as well as crafting workshops and self-led activities. You could be part of a busy learning team helping to organise and deliver these educational and fun programmes.

Be front of house

Join the warm and welcoming admissions team to help visitors plan their day, learn more about membership or discover special events on that day. All three properties are looking for customer facing roles in both the reception and the shops.

Share the history of the house

Share your passion for art and history as a room guide at any one of our properties. We have a large, friendly team of visitor engagement volunteers and room guides that welcome visitors into the houses and tell the stories behind the homes. If you enjoy communicating to visitors and sharing your knowledge then this is perfect for you.

Stay behind the scenes

If you enjoy marketing, social media or can offer administrative support, join one of the teams that’s buzzing away in the offices. All three properties benefit hugely from volunteers that work behind the scenes keeping on top of the day to day work and promoting all that we do to visitors.

Join the restaurant team

With three busy restaurants that serve delicious home cooked food we need people who enjoy and have a passion for food and service. There are opportunities front of house, serving, clearing and assisting during those peak times, as well as in the kitchen if you're a keen baker.

What is it like to volunteer?

If you've ever considered volunteering then let this short film show a little more of what you might expect volunteering at Beningbrough. Current volunteers and previous volunteers share their experiences and what they like best about it. The video itself was created as a volunteer project in partnership with the University of York.
