Eating and shopping at Birling Gap
Find the perfect gift at our cliff top shop. From books and cards to decorations for you and your home, there's something for everyone. Once you've finished browsing why not enjoy a latte, juice or beer overlooking the sea in our cosy cafe or savour a light snack or cake with a cup of tea. Breakfast is available from 10am-12, with light lunches from 12-2.30pm. All the profit we make in the shop and café helps us look after the countryside and places you love.
As you explore the countryside around Birling Gap find some respite from the elements and some retail therapy in our shop and café. Nestled within the former hotel building the café offers fairtrade tea and coffee with views of the English Channel and space for your canine friends. Find a seat next the veranda, overlooking the sea or shelter from the elements with a comforting bacon bap or soup from the kitchen. Try a National Trust classic like a slice of Victoria sandwich or cream tea with a fruit scone both of which are baked by James and Phill in the former hotel kitchen. Our gluten free cakes are individually wrapped to avoid contamination, soya milk is available and the team are happy to help you find an option to meet your needs. Buy a National Trust ‘keep’ cup for your takeaway drink and reduce your impact on the landscape. The café team are reducing single use plastic across our range. Our takeaway containers are made from plants not plastic and are all compostable. We offer glass bottles as an option for soft drinks. (We will still offer plastic bottles as many walkers like something light and squishable, please recycle them once you’re home) Profits from the cafe are used to support work including our weekly beach cleans.
Wander through to the National Trust shop, located in the old hotel bar, to find warm rugs and fleeces to keep cosy as you walk in the coastal breeze. If you’ve forgotten some walking essentials you can find plenty of finishing touches in the shop. In the summer you’ll find buckets and spades along with sun screen and hats. Throughout the year the shop has great gifts and greetings cards. During the autumn drop in for some Christmas gift shopping and a coffee with free parking outside for National Trust members and blue badge holders. Explore through to the back of the visitor centre and discover our hidden gem bookshop. All the books are generously donated by the local community to help use look after the South Downs. Browse through our selection of fiction and non-fiction titles for your next literary treasure and leave a donation to help us open access to the countryside for future generations.
