Group visits at the Birmingham Back to Backs

Camera club group visit standing in the courtyard

The Back to Backs provides a fascinating guided tour which tells the story of the ordinary people that made Birmingham an extraordinary city. This is the story we would like to tell to you and your group.

How group visits run

Visits to the Back to Backs are by guided tours only.
On the tour, your group will be taken on a journey through time to see what life was like in the Back to Back houses, starting in the 1840s bringing you through to the 1970s.

The tours go round in groups of 8 and takes approximatly 1 hour and 15 minutes with each tour starting every 15 minutes. Each group visit, allows a maximum of 48 people per day which is 6 tours per group.

Whilst each sub group is waiting for their tour to start/the others to finish, there is the exhibition, our emporium and the sweet shop on the corner to explore. We don’t have a tea-room on site but there are plenty of cafés, bars and restaurants on our door step to grab a bite to eat or liquid refreshments.

A few things your group should know

  • Please do book before you come. We are very popular and we want to be able to show you around. We cannot accept large groups on spec.
  • We have eight sets of steep and winding stairs. If you don’t think you or part of your group can manage them, we do offer ground floor tours. Please let us know when you are booking your visit and we will gladly arrange these as part of your visit.
  • There is no long stay parking outside the property for coaches, but there is a coach drop off point next to the Hippodrome. There is pre-bookable coach parking run by the Birmingham City Council just outside the city centre.
  • We are also a stone's throw from Birmingham Moor Street and Birmingham New Street Stations if you wish to travel here by train, and also a short walk from most of the city centre's bus stops.
