Volunteer at Birmingham Back to Backs

Have some free time? Do you fancy trying something different? Are you someone who loves local history? Then volunteering at the Birmingham Back to Backs could be the thing for you. From tour guiding to atmosphere set-up, we have a volunteer role to suit everyone.

Visitor Reception Assistant

As a Visitor Reception Assistant, you are one of the very first points of contact and you will provide great service that enhances the visitor’s enjoyment and experience while at the property.
There are many sides to the visitor reception, which as a volunteer you will be involved in, making it a very interesting role.

Booking Line Assistant

As a first point of contact for most visitors to the property, you'll ensure that everyone wishing to visit is booked on a tour before they arrive and that everyone has all the information they need regarding their visit from directions, to access information and even get the chance to be a tourist information point for those wondering what to pair their visit with or where's good to eat.

Tour Guides

Everyone knows the Back to Backs is by guided tours only, and what does every guided tour need. A tour guide.
As a tour guide, you will tell our story to those wishing to hear it. From the story of how the back to backs came to be, to the stories of the people who lived and worked in these fascinating houses.

Atmospheres Set-Up Assistant

As a set-up assistant, you will be involved in creating the back drop to the wonderful stories we tell here at the Back to Backs.
You will light fires and candles, (un)make the beds, doing a bit of washing and set up the sights, sounds and smells that make the Back to Backs a window into this city's past.

Volunteer open days

We have many roles which suit different people so to help you decide which role you'd enjoy and whether we are the right place for you, we offer open days at various points throughout the year.
On an open day, you will;
  • have a chance to see the property through one of our guided tours
  • find out what exciting roles we are currently recruiting for
  • meet and talk to existing volunteers about what they do and what they have to say about volunteering for us
  • have a chance to ask any questions you may have about volunteering for the Birmingham Back to Backs
