Medieval merriments and May games at Bodiam Castle
Visit the castle this month and join in some fun and games as we celebrate the arrival of Spring and look forward to warmer days and the promise of summer.
The arrival of Spring
The arrival of spring was a time for celebration in medieval England. The fasting of Lent was over, the religious duties of Easter performed and the crops were growing well in the fields. Life took on a gentler pace in May and with the improving weather came the promise of summer. There was much to celebrate and time to do it.
The merry month of May started with some Medieval Merriments, but if you missed these there's still plenty going on throughout this fun-filled month.
What is ‘Bringing in the May’?
Find out the tradition behind this at one of our medieval characters’ presentations throughout each day. These informal talks take place on the hour in the Great Hall and will be on the themes of storytelling, bringing in the May and sports and May games. Listen to some medieval stories such as that of Willikin of the Weald, join in making a May pyramid or get a close up look at a traditional longbow.
