Family activites

Children climbing a tree in the grounds of Mottisfont, Hampshire.

The island is its own adventure playground complete with a natural play area, free activity trails and tracker packs to help your family explore the outdoors and wildlife every day of the season. There are also family-friendly eating places and facilities for when you need a quick pit stop.

Natural play area

With new adventures always being added, the natural play area is the perfect way to encourage those little legs to walk that little bit further! With a den building area, pine cone shy, performance stage and even some crocodiles, there is plenty to keep children (and adults!) entertained. Take a picnic with you or pick up yourself up with a take away coffee at the Outdoor Centre while your family plays.

Free tracker packs and activity trails

Our rangers have specially pre prepared tracker packs for your family to pick up on your voyage across the countryside.  These are available to collect from the Visitor Centre for free and our friendly team of volunteers will help you on your way.  Follow the popular tree trail and let your little monkey climb particular trees around the island. For the younger children, the discovery booklet will help them identify some of the island’s wildlife or why not head to the beach with our coastal creatures trail and track down animals and plants that call the shoreline home.

50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾ activities

Our favourite challenges to do on Brownsea are to play conkers with a friend, catching the first falling autumn leaf or spot birds on the lagoon snuggled up on a hide.  Or, you can cross off climbing a tree with Brownsea’s famous tree climbing trail.  If you don’t’ already have yours, 50 Things booklets can be picked up at the Visitor Centre ready to start your adventure.

Visitor Centre activites

Make time travel possible for budding historians at the Visitor Centre which offers a chance to learn about Brownsea’s eccentric and mysterious owners. Find out about when lots of people left the island and cows roamed free or what happened to the vanishing pottery factory.  For your younger visitors arts and crafts including colouring sheets are available while you take a seat and soak up a bit of Brownsea’s past life.

Family facilities

We have baby changing facilities, off road buggies available to book out and children’s lunches available in the café.
