Here comes the summer

Explore the Buckland Abbey estate

Whatever the weather, a day full of family fun awaits at Buckland Abbey. Whether you head out on an estate trail, dress up like a Tudor or create a special souvenir at a craft workshop, there's plenty to enjoy all summer long.

Follow in Drake's footsteps

Pick up a passport from Visitor Welcome and head out onto the yellow estate walk to collect stamps from all of the countries Sir Francis Drake visited on his circumnavigation. Can you find them all? There's also an indoor trail where you'll look for penguins who have disguised themselves as members of Drake's crew and hidden around the Abbey. Join a storytelling session on a Thursday during the school holidays and you'll hear lots more about Drake's daring deeds.

Both trails will be up and running ready for the summer holidays.

Getting crafty

From felt animals to glass tiles, and from making magical worlds to Cosmic eggs, there are lots of fantastic workshops and activities planned for the summer holidays at Buckland this year. Follow the link below for updates on dates, times and prices.

Adventures in the outdoors

Tuesdays are for Tudor picnics this summer, so why not bring along a spot of lunch or treat yourself to something delicious in the restaurant, and enjoy it while sitting in our beautiful Elizabethan style tent? There will also be some fun outdoor games to play in the gardens every Friday throughout the school holidays.

Fancy learning some bushcraft skills? Local expert Craig Grant will be running workshops on selected dates in August on the Buckland estate. To find out more and book your place, please visit Craig's website here.

Located on the edge of Great North Wood, a 15 minute stroll along the red and blue estate walk takes you to the Higher Paddock play area where you can discover balance beams, places to build a secret den, a zip-wire and more. The play area features lots of natural play equipment installed by our Ranger team, who worked with local primary school children to design its layout.

Feeling peckish?

Stop by the Ox Yard restaurant for lunch or refuel with cuppa and a slice of delicious cake.

The fun doesn't have to stop here

Before you go, make sure you pop into Buckland's shop to pick a souvenir or gift - at the moment there are medieval games available so you can continue the fun at home. Stop by for plants, pocket-money gifts, sweets, books and more! Every penny you spend on site helps us to look after Drake's place for ever, for everyone - buying treats has never felt so good.
