Celebrate Christmas at Chartwell

Weekends only between Saturday 4 December - Sunday 19 December; 11am-3pm, last entry 2.30pm.

Celebrate in style as we open select rooms of the house at Chartwell, all beautifully decorated for a Churchill family Christmas.

Join us in 1946, the first year that the Churchill family returned to Chartwell after the war to celebrate, home at last and surrounded by their family.

The whole house is decorated inspired by Lady Churchill’s classic taste with greenery from the estate taking pride of place along the mantle pieces, and some family gifts already sitting pretty under the trees, reflecting Christmas as the family would have known it.

A house ticket will be required for entry into the house. Please pick yours up from the Visitor Centre on arrival. Tickets are limited we cannot guarantee entry.

Tickets for the Christmas opening run every ten minutes between 11am and 2.30pm. Two time slots per day (1.30pm and 2.30pm) are available to book in advance online to help our visitors travelling from further away guarantee their entry. All other tickets are sold on the day from our Visitor Centre.

Beginning in Lady Churchill’s Sitting Room, discover a brand new display covering the handover of Chartwell to the National Trust, the details of which were finalised at the end of 1946 before being confirmed in 1947.

Journey through to the Hall where the famous original visitor book sits pride of place and learn about some of the famous visitors lucky enough to visit the family at Christmas.

Step into the Library, where the family would have traditionally had their tree covered in green foliage decorations sourced from the grounds.

Newly opened at the beginning of 2020, and this year opening for its first ever Christmas, see the Secretaries' Office and discover more about those that worked for the family with new archival sources brought out just for Christmas. Afterwards, head back to the Drawing Room for a glimpse into some of the preventive conservation our team gets up to.

Downstairs see the Dining Room where the family would have gathered for food and fun. See Churchill’s ‘Bottlescape’, painted one Christmastime after Winston asked the children to scour the house for whatever bottles they could find.

Finally, the Kitchen will show the history of rationing even post war that took place throughout Britain and how that affected the recipes cooked in this very room.

Sir Winston’s Studio and our Exhibition Winston Churchill in 50 objects are also open to enjoy.
