The orchards form part of this, and the exquisite fruits from the beautiful blossoming apple and pear trees ensure that our dishes are fresh, tasty and delightful.
The apple orchards have been a hugely important part of the Walled Kitchen Garden since the times of the Dukes of Newcastle. They were carefully maintained to the highest possible ducal standards by a hardy team of gardeners to ensure the harvest was among the best in the country.
In fact the apples were so delicious, that the Dukes would order boxes full of them to be delivered via train to their home in London on Christmas Day!
The gardens team still use traditional growing methods today from the times of the Dukes.
As well as our nationally recognised local apples collection, our Walled kitchen garden is home to 130 different types of Rhubarb which has been awarded national collection status. Our chefs love to show this off in a range of rhubarb inspired dishes on our menu, and these compliment the apples from our apples superbly.
