Caring about pests
We check pest traps quarterly and winter is no exception, although it is a quiet time for pests.
We check pest traps quarterly and winter is no exception, although it is a quiet time for pests. We are looking for things like moths, carpet beetles, silverfish and furniture beetles which damage our collections, although occasionally we get the odd ground beetle or ladybird. We don’t catch to kill (although this is an inevitable side effect of getting stuck in the sticky traps) but rather to monitor.
By checking quarterly we can identify trends and hopefully catch a growing problem before it gets too big. The pest monitoring tells us other things about our environment too – whether it’s too damp or humid, which can also adversely affect out collections in other ways. It’s a grim job but someone’s got to do it!
