A secret wartime base

Croome played an important role in the Second World War. Throughout the year we have talks, walks, displays and a Airfield heritage day where you can see and hear Croome's story. Chat to our volunteers in the museum and listen to their stories during their time at RAF Defford base.

RAF Defford

Discover the secrets of the Second World War airbase now our visitor centre. In the 1940s RAF Defford housed over 2,000 service personnel and scientists who tested radar to meet new enemy threats. Some of these wartime buildings, once the wartime hospital complex, still remain and some have been restored to become our Visitor Centre and museum.
