The facilities arrive at Calke Explore

With the ground works complete, things are starting to take shape at Calke Explore. The Portakabins have been delivered to the site, which contain toilets and a Food and Beverage kiosk. They’ve been custom-made for us, to provide comfortable facilities for visitors, including a Changing Place. While they look a little out of place at the moment, the Portakabins will be clad in wood (most of which comes from the Calke Estate) so they’ll be more in-keeping with the natural surroundings. We’re aiming to open Calke Explore in the summer holidays, but this will be dependent on the progress of fitting out the facilities – watch this space!

Building works complete

Hurray! The main building work is now complete at the Calke Explore site, which means the contractors have left and the compound in Raggs Close has been removed. This is an exciting stage of the project as we move into the site to begin setting up the facilities, ready for a summer opening. We’ll also be doing some conservation work in the area, including extensive tree planting. Watch this space for more updates as we get closer to the opening of Calke Explore.

Traffic flow improvements at Middle Lodge

As more and more visitors come to enjoy over 600 acres of historic parkland at Calke Abbey, the Middle Lodge admissions point has become a significant bottleneck on very busy days. To keep your entry as smooth as possible, we’re making a few changes in this area. The existing admissions hut is moving further down the drive, away from the lodge, meaning we can extend the second and third lanes. Visitors will be able to pick a lane more easily – ultimately speeding up traffic flow into the parkland. From January 21st, the work will take up to five weeks. As it’s a quieter time of year, we hope the impact will be minimal with small delays possible, however, it does mean that vehicles will no longer be able to park at Ragg’s Close just beyond Middle Lodge. You can still use the main car park which has access to all our parkland walks as well as the café and gardens, and the new car park at Calke Explore will open later this year. The admissions hut will operate as usual during these works.
