Kym making shortbread at Dunstable Downs

Do you have a few hours to spare? Would you like to make new friends? Would you like to make a difference? We are always looking for people who have a little spare time to help us at the Chiltern Gateway Centre in a variety of roles.

Volunteering is so rewarding!

However much time you have to spare, be it a day, half a day or a few hours once a week or once a month, your help will be very welcome. Whatever your skills or interests there will be somewhere that you can join in and help.

Food and Beverage

Our View Café, named for obvious reasons, is popular all year round and our kitchen staff need reliable volunteers to help with cooking, serving and general clearing up. The menu changes regularly and there are permanent favourites so if cooking is your expertise, we'd love to hear from you.

If you would have a cheery smile for our visitors, as you take their orders or clear a vacant table, get in touch. There is a friendly atmosphere in the kitchen and though some of the work is quite tiring - it is very rewarding - so if you have a few hours to spare on a regular basis and like people our kitchen staff would welcome your help.

Retail Therapy

Most of us love to shop and we have lots of lovely things to tempt people in our newly refurbished shop so to make the experience of shopping with us as enjoyable as possible we really would love to hear from anyone who has a few hours to spare.

If you are a 'people person' you might like to help our visitors find what they are looking for and maybe suggest items they could buy for friends and family now that we have our Christmas stock arriving.

If you like having things in order you could help to keep the shelves stocked up and make sure they are tidy. Of course there is always serving people at the till and we would provide special training to enable you to do this. Whatever your interest in this area we would be delighted to welcome you.

Visitor experience

Visitor experience is the thread that runs through everything we do in the Chiltern Gateway Centre as it means giving our visitors the very best experience possible whenever they come to Dunstable Downs.

We need volunteers to man our reception desk so, if you have a ready smile and like helping people, this could be the slot for you. You will be given all the help you need in order to help them. We have lots of information about the Downs to pass on to the visitors, from where would be the best route for a wheelchair user to how they can get to Chute Wood for example.

Events

One of the most important activities for the visitor experience team is arranging a large number of events throughout the year. These vary from children's activities, especially during the school holidays, family events where everyone can be involved and specific events for people who are interested in nature. The latter are arranged in conjunction with the countryside team; the rangers have a wealth of knowledge to share with people booking on our walks.

We are always grateful for help with these events, especially the children's where the more adult help the better.

Raffles and membership

Selling raffle tickets is another way to help or persuading people to join the National Trust - again help and training would be given for these roles.

There are so many ways that volunteering can help and there one or two rewards such as special badges when you have worked with us for five, ten or fifteen years! Make a start by contacting us now dunstabledowns@nationaltrust.org.uk
