This summer, Sissinghurst will host a specially-commissioned art installation by Charlotte Smithson, a Manchester-based artist whose work blends design, craft and botany. Sitting side by side our new in house exhibition this year, 'Nature Indoors At Sissinghurst' we explore another layer to bringing nature indoors and the beauty that this connection has.
Charlotte has exhibited across the UK including at the Garden Museum, RHS Chelsea Flower Show and collaborated with the University of Derby’s Nature Connectedness Research Group.
‘Another World Than This’ takes its title from a line in one of Vita’s poems, and is deeply inspired by her close connection with nature, and especially flowers. The piece will fill the Oast House with a delicate suspension of glassware, containing botanical treasures from the Sissinghurst gardens, encouraging visitors to notice the exquisite details found in nature that are often overlooked.
Charlotte was chosen for the commission because of her deep-rooted connection to the natural world. The way she brings the natural world indoors evokes the way the garden’s creators, Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson, lived within their garden as much as their indoor spaces. Her installations are delicate and romantic, encompassing a love of place and nature.
