Bring your own book

‘Bring your own book’ and relax in Wimpole’s magnificent library room. Amid the bustle of Christmas and New Year, take an hour for yourself, put on your slippers and sit in peace to read.

  • Booking essential
  • Free event (admission applies)

Enjoy a peaceful hour's reading, surrounded by the historic setting of the library and shelves of books collected over the course of 300 years by Wimpole’s owners. One of the most remarkable rooms in the house, the library was designed in 1713, by the architect James Gibbs, for the owners Edward, Lord Harley, the 2nd Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer and his wife, Lady Henrietta Cavendish-Holles.

Pre-booking is essential to enjoy this unique experience and step inside the library, not usually open to the public. This isn't a tour, but a rare opportunity to enjoy the peace of a grand setting and read quietly.

Importantly, as well as bringing your book, make sure you bring a pair of warm and comfortable, soft-soled slippers / socks. The historic carpet in the library is significant and very fragile and hard-soled footwear is forbidden. The library room is usually roped at the doorway and no entry permitted, so it’s always a great treat for the staff to slip off their shoes and walk into the room. We hope you’ll enjoy doing the same in this rare and limited opportunity.

What is Gift Aid?

Most of our places run the Gift Aid on Entry scheme at their admission points.

Under this scheme, if you're not a member you have the choice of two entry tickets:

  • Gift Aid Admission
  • Standard Admission

If the place runs Gift Aid on Entry, we'll offer you a clear choice between the Gift Aid Admission prices and the Standard Admission prices at the admission point. It's entirely up to you which ticket you choose.

Gift Aid Admission includes a 10 per cent or more voluntary donation. Gift Aid Admissions let us reclaim tax on the whole amount paid - an extra 25 per cent - potentially a very significant boost to our places' funds.

An extra £1 paid under the scheme can be worth over £3 to the National Trust as shown below:

  Gift Aid Standard
Amount paid by visitor £11.00 £10.00
Tax refund from Government* £2.75 £0.00
Total received by the National Trust £13.75 £10.00

Free entry for National Trust members.
