Christmas at Petworth: Festive traditions through time

Spend the 2021 festive season at Petworth, and discover different Christmas traditions celebrated through the years, including Georgian, Victorian, post-war and the future.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

Explore Christmas through the years in Petworth House. Step into the Georgian period in the Somerset and Square Dining Room, and discover mannequins crafted by hand with garden greenery inspired by Elizabeth Ilive and the 3rd Earl, along with gifts influenced by Jane Austen’s diary.

Christmas trees bring merriment in the Victorian themed Marble Hall, a time when celebrating the festivities with decorated evergreens became popular, thanks to an illustration of the royal family in the 1848 Illustrated London News. See these historic outfits recreated from flowers and foliage on mannequins, and write a Christmas card to a loved one.

See how despite the 1940s war era, families still celebrated Christmas with warmth and joy in the Little Dining Room. Then finally, travel through time to a fantastical future Christmas throughout the Carved and Red Room. See the magical contemporary box Christmas tree installation and discover how families will gather to celebrate the festivities in the future

What is Gift Aid?

Most of our places run the Gift Aid on Entry scheme at their admission points.

Under this scheme, if you're not a member you have the choice of two entry tickets:

  • Gift Aid Admission
  • Standard Admission

If the place runs Gift Aid on Entry, we'll offer you a clear choice between the Gift Aid Admission prices and the Standard Admission prices at the admission point. It's entirely up to you which ticket you choose.

Gift Aid Admission includes a 10 per cent or more voluntary donation. Gift Aid Admissions let us reclaim tax on the whole amount paid - an extra 25 per cent - potentially a very significant boost to our places' funds.

An extra £1 paid under the scheme can be worth over £3 to the National Trust as shown below:

  Gift Aid Standard
Amount paid by visitor £11.00 £10.00
Tax refund from Government* £2.75 £0.00
Total received by the National Trust £13.75 £10.00
