Medieval Village

Travel back in time to the 12th century and experience the life of knights and siege engineers in the castle. Have a go at penmanship and games in the medieval village.

Learn some of the skills you'd need to become a noble knight and begin training with a sword, spear and shield.

Have a go with a crossbow (£1 for 5 bolts for ages 7+).

Visit the siege engineer to find out about attack and defense of the castle.

Learn about medieval penmanship and have a go at illuminations, calligraphy and heraldry with a quill and ink.

Try out 12th century board games.

What is Gift Aid?

Most of our places run the Gift Aid on Entry scheme at their admission points.

Under this scheme, if you're not a member you have the choice of two entry tickets:

  • Gift Aid Admission
  • Standard Admission

If the place runs Gift Aid on Entry, we'll offer you a clear choice between the Gift Aid Admission prices and the Standard Admission prices at the admission point. It's entirely up to you which ticket you choose.

Gift Aid Admission includes a 10 per cent or more voluntary donation. Gift Aid Admissions let us reclaim tax on the whole amount paid - an extra 25 per cent - potentially a very significant boost to our places' funds.

An extra £1 paid under the scheme can be worth over £3 to the National Trust as shown below:

Child price applies for 5-17 year olds (inclusive). Family ticket admits two adults plus up to three children for the price of two adults plus one child. One adult family ticket admits one adult plus up to three children for the price of one adult plus one child. Visitors arriving by public transport are offered a discount voucher with admission to the castle. Voucher redeemable at the shop or tea-rooms.

Accessibility
Please be aware that there are steps, steep slopes and uneven paths in the castle. There is wheelcahir access to the outer bailey only.
