There’s plenty to see, from spectacular artworks to beautiful landscapes. Enjoy a summer picnic on the south lawn, or let little visitors explore new play areas in the woodland and the Kitchen Garden.

The gardens are largely laid out as they were over a century ago in their Edwardian heyday. Discover the abundant floral displays of the Formal Gardens, wander through the vibrant autumn colour of the Japanese Garden, and explore the Kitchen Garden, where Queen Victoria once sent her own gardeners for inspiration.

The house is open daily from 1030-1500 and you can collect a free timed entry ticket on arrival (subject to availability). Displaying remarkable paintings by renowned artists like Rubens, Van Dyck, Titian and Brueghel, it is a miniature ‘national gallery’ for the South West, and also includes Bankes' collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts, the largest private collection in the UK.

The basics

The ground floor of the house (three rooms) is accessible for wheelchair and mobility scooter users. A virtual tour is on offer giving 360-degree views of all rooms. Most paths around the garden are gravel and flat. There is a 5km route around the woodland suitable for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters can be booked in advance by calling 01202 883402.
