Winter Wassail

Come along and join our Winter Wassail on Sunday 30 January. Huzzah! Dress in brightly coloured clothes and bring along something to make lots of noise to help ward off bad luck. Join us for some afternoon cheer and outdoor fun!

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

National Trust Stowe and The Mid Shires Orchard Group welcome you to our 2022 Winter Wassail! The Anglo-Saxon wes haile! or wase hail! was a hearty wish for good health and fortune. We shout Wassail! to toast our apple trees, that they may be healthy and fruitful for the coming year and bring us good harvest and bounty. We also make lots of noise to ward off bad luck and mischievous spirits, so they stay away and don’t steal the fruit!

The procession will begin at 1.30pm and will commence from just outside the New Inn. We welcome audience participation in the Wassail song. Also, whenever the Wassail Leader says ‘Wassail!’, please respond with a loud cheer of ‘Huzzah!’

We encourage you to bring something along to help us make as much noise as possible. So grab those bells, drums, whistles, pots and pans, cups with stones in, or anything else you can find.

The wassail will involve a procession to the orchards and apple trees, singing, chanting, toasting the health of the trees with a small glass of cider or apple juice, and other traditional ceremonial activities. Our café will also be selling hot apple and cinnamon juice and toffee apple cake especially on this day.

What is Gift Aid?

Most of our places run the Gift Aid on Entry scheme at their admission points.

Under this scheme, if you're not a member you have the choice of two entry tickets:

  • Gift Aid Admission
  • Standard Admission

If the place runs Gift Aid on Entry, we'll offer you a clear choice between the Gift Aid Admission prices and the Standard Admission prices at the admission point. It's entirely up to you which ticket you choose.

Gift Aid Admission includes a 10 per cent or more voluntary donation. Gift Aid Admissions let us reclaim tax on the whole amount paid - an extra 25 per cent - potentially a very significant boost to our places' funds.

An extra £1 paid under the scheme can be worth over £3 to the National Trust as shown below:

  Gift Aid Standard
Amount paid by visitor £11.00 £10.00
Tax refund from Government* £2.75 £0.00
Total received by the National Trust £13.75 £10.00
