'Chirk Under the Covers' - special guided tours

Join one of our special guided weekend tours this November to take a look at Chirk behind the scenes, peek through some usually closed doors, and find out about the special conservation work our House team do over the winter.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

During winter our House Team are able to get to work on all of the intensive conservation work that a 700 year old castle requires. The castle is closed during the week, and the castle is tucked up under dust covers.

It's a perfect time to open some normally closed doors, have a look at things that are usually hidden away, and find out about some of the specialist work on on of our weekend, volunteer guided 'under the covers' tours.

Tours are by timed-ticket, available on the day.

What is Gift Aid?

Most of our places run the Gift Aid on Entry scheme at their admission points.

Under this scheme, if you're not a member you have the choice of two entry tickets:

  • Gift Aid Admission
  • Standard Admission

If the place runs Gift Aid on Entry, we'll offer you a clear choice between the Gift Aid Admission prices and the Standard Admission prices at the admission point. It's entirely up to you which ticket you choose.

Gift Aid Admission includes a 10 per cent or more voluntary donation. Gift Aid Admissions let us reclaim tax on the whole amount paid - an extra 25 per cent - potentially a very significant boost to our places' funds.

An extra £1 paid under the scheme can be worth over £3 to the National Trust as shown below:

  Gift Aid Standard
Amount paid by visitor £11.00 £10.00
Tax refund from Government* £2.75 £0.00
Total received by the National Trust £13.75 £10.00

*Gift Aid Admissions let us reclaim tax on the whole amount paid - an extra 25 per cent - potentially a very significant boost to our places' funds.

Please note...

Please note: we offer reduced, off-peak pricing from 3 February to 9 March 2018, and 10 to 25 November 2018 (weekends only), when the State Rooms are not fully open due to conservation work.

Accessibility
Access to the house is up several flights of steps so will not be suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. Buggies are also not allowed in the house - child carriers are available
Other
PLEASE NOTE that due to changes to the visitor route to show behind the scenes spaces these tours are physically demanding with some steep stairs and narrow corridors. Children are welcome to go on the tours at their parents discretion, but please bear in mind that once the tour starts it is not possible to leave it halfway through. LAST TOUR STARTS 3PM. During November access to the main rooms inside the castle is by guided tour only - there is no freeflow access to the main rooms. The Adam Tower, cafe, shop, and garden are open as normal. Off-peak admission prices apply due to reduced opening. Timed Tickets are available from the Ticket Office on arrival (places are limited 15 per tour - tickets may go quickly if demand is high). Tours are free, but a normal admission ticket is required. National Trust members are free.
