Queen’s Platinum Jubilee beacon lighting

To celebrate the Her Majesty The Queen's Platinum Jubilee the beacon at Culver Down will be set alight

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

As a part of the celebrations for Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee on Thursday evening 2 June more than 1,500 hundred beacons will be lit across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, UK overseas territories and in each of the capital cities of the Commonwealth. The beacon on Culver Down will be lit at 9.15pm. The evening now starts at the earlier time of 8.45pm with the especially appointed for the day, Bembridge Town Crier, Robert Barnes, in full Scottish regalia, undertaking the Royal Proclamation. This is followed by local GP Doctor Cooney, also clad in tartan, playing the especially commissioned piece ‘Diu Regnare’.

A unique Bugle Call ‘Majesty’, played by Irene Burrow, will herald the Beacon lighting ceremony and the blessing of the Jubilee event by the Rev. Steve Daughtery.

For the lighting itself, Deputy Lord Lieutenant Caroline Peel will be joined by a local scout chosen for their outstanding community work. They will light the torch that will be stretched up to the beacon at 9.15pm. This will be accompanied by the Shiners singing ‘A Life Lived with Grace’.

What is Gift Aid?

Most of our places run the Gift Aid on Entry scheme at their admission points.

Under this scheme, if you're not a member you have the choice of two entry tickets:

  • Gift Aid Admission
  • Standard Admission

If the place runs Gift Aid on Entry, we'll offer you a clear choice between the Gift Aid Admission prices and the Standard Admission prices at the admission point. It's entirely up to you which ticket you choose.

Gift Aid Admission includes a 10 per cent or more voluntary donation. Gift Aid Admissions let us reclaim tax on the whole amount paid - an extra 25 per cent - potentially a very significant boost to our places' funds.

An extra £1 paid under the scheme can be worth over £3 to the National Trust as shown below:

  Gift Aid Standard
Amount paid by visitor £11.00 £10.00
Tax refund from Government* £2.75 £0.00
Total received by the National Trust £13.75 £10.00
