Dedicate a donation FAQs

Bossington Hill above Porlock Bay, on the Holnicote Estate, Exmoor National Park, Somerset.

Here are the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about dedicating a donation using our interactive giving map. However, if there’s anything else you’d like to know, please get in touch by emailing us at giving@nationaltrust.org.uk. We’d be happy to help.

1. Why has the National Trust created this new way of giving?

Memories connect us to places. So we’re making it easier to leave a dedication to those places that mean something special to you. Dedicate a donation is a new online map where you can celebrate a memory at any place we care for, by giving a donation of your choice. Perhaps there’s somewhere close to home that brings back a special memory. Or somewhere that makes you think of a loved one.

2. If I make my dedication private, will I still be able to see it and share it with my friends and family?

Yes, you will be sent a ‘personal link’ in your confirmation email once your dedication has been reviewed and approved by one of our team. This shouldn’t take more than three-working days. Whilst a private dedication will still appear on our map, the details will only be visible to you and anyone you send your personal link to.

3. What sort of information can I include in my message?

We want your message to feel as personal to you as you would like, however please do consider that what you write may be viewed by the public, or at least your friends and family. You and your loved ones' online security is of upmost importance to us. We are governed by the Fundraising Regulator and we adhere to strict information security regulations. We therefore won’t be able to publish any content that can be directly linked back to an individual. Find out more about the National Trust's privacy policy

4. Why can’t I submit my own photo?

We want your dedication to feel special and unique to you and your loved one. Many of our supporters have told us that they share these unique connections with our places, so we wanted to offer a selection of images to choose from for your dedication. We are still assessing whether this feels unique and personal enough for our supporters, so please do get in touch with us via giving@nationaltrust.org.uk to tell us your thoughts.

5. How do I know if my dedication has been completed successfully?

The last stage of the dedication process is making your donation, which is triggered once you have entered your personal and payment details and clicked ‘Yes, I confirm my payment’. If your donation has been successful there will be a message at the top of the page saying 'Thank you'. You should also receive a confirmation email within 20 minutes of completing your order, with further information regarding the moderation process. If you don’t think your donation has been successful, please get in touch via the ‘Need help?’ icon or by calling 0344 800 1895.

6. Why is there a three-working day moderation process?

Whilst we hope your dedication will be approved within a shorter timeframe, during busy periods our team may need a little longer to ensure they give each dedication the time and attention they deserve. Please bear with us whilst we work through these.

7. Why haven’t I received my confirmation email?

You should receive your confirmation email within 20 minutes of donating. If after this time you haven’t received the email please check your junk folder. If you’re still having difficulty, please get in touch by calling 0344 800 1895.

8. I’ve donated to a specific place, will the money be spent there?

Your donation will go towards your chosen property, or – in a small number of cases – a portfolio of local properties run by the same conservation team. Please get in touch by emailing us at giving@nationaltrust.org.uk if you’d like to discuss this further.

9. I would like to dedicate a donation to a place that isn’t listed on the map – is that possible?

At the moment we are only able to offer the properties as they are listed on our ‘visit places’ map (which also mirrors our handbook), however we will review the properties offered over the course of the next twelve months.

10. How can I change my dedication once it’s live?

Once you've submitted your dedication, it will not be possible for you to make any changes, including switching your dedication from public to private or vice versa. Please take time to make sure you're happy with your dedication before confirming and donating. Where major errors have been made, we will do our best to help. Get in touch by emailing us at giving@nationaltrust.org.uk.

11. Why has my dedication been rejected?

We use our discretion to reject dedications if they do not meet the standards described in our website terms and conditions. Content must not be inappropriate, offensive or misleading. If your dedication is rejected, you’ll receive an email letting you know and your dedication will not be published on our map. As a charity, we are unable to refund donations.

12. Can I get a refund if my dedication is rejected?

We do not process refunds on donations, but we will work with you to ensure your dedication is able to be published. Donations will only be refunded in very limited circumstances, in accordance with the Institute of Fundraising guidelines.

13. I understand that my dedication will be live for one year. Will you tell me when it is about to expire?

We hope to have this reminder service ready for the one-year anniversary of your dedication.

14. I’ve seen a dedication that offends me and would like to make a complaint – how do I do that?

You can make a complaint via our Supporter Service Centre, either over the phone by calling 0344 800 1895, or by emailing us at giving@nationaltrust.org.uk. Find out more about the National Trust's complaints procedure.

15. I’d like to make a complaint about your ‘no refund’ procedure – how do I do that?

You can make a complaint via our Supporter Service Centre, either over the phone by calling 0344 800 1895, or by emailing us at giving@nationaltrust.org.uk. Find out more about the National Trust's complaints procedure.

16. Why has my message been changed?

In accordance with our moderation guidelines, dedications may be edited for length and clarity. If you notice some small changes to your message once your dedication is live it's probably because you accidentally included some information which we cannot publish due to our security regulations. If you feel your dedication has been changed too much or you wish to discuss why we've made particular changes please email us at giving@nationaltrust.org.uk.

17. How do I delete my dedication?

We hope you won't want to delete your dedication before it is automatically removed after one year, but if that is the case then please email giving@nationaltrust.org.uk and we'll take care of it for you.
