Petworth House ancient trees walk, West Sussex
With 70 acres of park to explore, Petworth House is the perfect place for a wildlife walk.
Petworth House is a magnificent house set in 700 acres of landscaped deer park that's home to an array of characterful veteran trees as well as a herd of fallow deer that have lived there for more than 500 years.
Some of the trees are more than 400 years old, including an ancient oak that guards the approach to the 'Capability' Brown-designed Lower Pond. The annual migration of amphibians to the pond is aided by a tunnel running under the main road, so watch out for a procession of frogs and toads in the spring.
This is a moderate walk of four miles which should take approximately one and a half hours. The terrain is steep in places and can be muddy underfoot.
