This area of the Lake District is home to England’s highest mountain, Scarfell, and its deepest lake, Wastwater.

- Gentle trails, rugged fells and rivers make Buttermere, Ennerdale and Whitehaven Coast, in Cumbria, a view-seeker’s paradise
- Sizergh, Cumbria, is adored by fell runners because of its classic mountain and river scenery. There are nice routes along the banks of the River Kent here
- There are plenty of trails to choose from at Grasmere, Cumbria. Most routes have the mountains of the Lake District as a backdrop
- The Cage at Lyme Park in Cheshire overlooks the moors and 1,300 acres of parkland. It’s well worth running up Cage Hill for the view
