'The Lost Words' family activities in the North West
‘Once upon a time, words began to vanish from the language of children. They disappeared so quietly at first, almost no one noticed – until one day, they were gone…’
Go on a word hunt and take part in special family activities inspired by Robert McFarlane and Jackie Morris' spellbook, The Lost Words. The book features words from the natural world which have disappeared from the Oxford Junior Dictionary as children spend less time outdoors. Words like ‘broadband’ and ‘chatroom’ have replaced others describing the natural world, like ‘bramble’ and ‘conker’.
Explore the different seasons and the special words associated with them as The Lost Words comes to life at the following places in the North West:
- Lyme, Spring and Summer: 23 March - 1 September 2019
- Dunham Massey, 7 September - 3 April 2020
- Quarry Bank, 6 April - 31 August 2020
