Walking trail

Enjoy a walk along the tranquil banks of the river Skell and into the site of a former spa. Return through the village of Aldfield and into the deer park at Studley Royal and Seven Bridges Valley.

Fountains Abbey visitor centre


Follow the bridleway from the visitor centre in the direction of West Gate disabled car park. At the end of the bridleway turn left and diagonally cross the road downhill to reach a public footpath on the right. Walk along the footpath as it meets the river Skell and continue along a track into Spa Gill wood alongside the river.


Look out for the ruins of Aldfi eld Spa and take the footpath on the right just before the cottage remains which lead you behind the building and uphill (keep your eyes peeled as there are no signs here). Follow the path out of the woodland and into fi elds. This will take you into the village of Aldfield. Turn right in the village and right again beside the church. Follow the road until you see a footpath on the left which crosses several fields before joining the Fountains Abbey estate road, opposite St Mary's Church and an obelisk.

Cross the estate road and enter Studley Royal deer park via the pedestrian gate. Follow the mown grass paths which lead down to the lakeside and head left around the lake to take you into the Seven Bridges valley.

Cross over the series of small stone bridges and pass through a metal kissing gate. Continue along the path around to the left and follow the bridleway as it passes Plumpton Hall and emerges into Studley Roger village.

Turn left to enter Studley Royal deer park and follow the mown grass paths back towards St Mary’s Church. Walk through the gate and turn left following the bridleway which will take you back to the visitor centre.

The Lost Spa trail


This walk takes you along bridleways, footpaths, roadways and gravel tracks through this delightful estate. The terrain is fairly easy walking though there are a few moderate hills. Sensible shoes are recommended as the ground can be muddy in poor weather.

Dogs are welcome on short leads.

Nearest main railway station is Harrogate, 12 miles (19.3km) from Fountains Abbey.

By road

4 miles (6.4km) west of Ripon off B6265 to Pateley Bridge, signposted from A1, 12 miles (19.3km) north of Harrogate (A61).
