Hardwick, the perfect Christmas gift

Christmas presents underneath a decorated tree

Celebrate at Hardwick this festive season with “The Perfect Gift”. Discover the traditions of Hardwick’s past as we reveal some of the gifts given to the estate over 400 years.

The team at Hardwick have been working hard over the last couple of months researching through the archives to discover the precious and unusual gifts that have been given to Hardwick throughout the collections 400 year history. "Over the centuries members of the family and their friends have added to the collection at Hardwick" comments House and Collections Manager, Nigel Wright, "the sixth Duke was a great collector and enjoyed decorating Hardwick in Elizabethan style".

The collecting of gifts does not stop with the inside. The gardens cataolgue notes the arrival of different species as well as important trees. "We know the exact history of our champion cedar tree" says Marie, Senior Gardener, "it is wonderful to be connected to the history of the garden via the gardeners who have cared for it.

The House will be decorated with giant trees and beautiful floral displays. Visitors can share what their favourite and most precious gifts have been on our "gifts tree". Smaller visitors can enjoy the story trail round the hall - this year's story is the magical Tailor of Gloucester.

The kitchens at Hardwick will come alive with crafts and activities that everyone can enjoy. There will be lots to interest for visitors of all ages and something that everyone can have a go at. There will be a small donation for the individual crafts.

There will also be hands on crafts in the south gazebo in the gardens - make sure you also write your letter to Father Christmas.

There will be plenty of festive delights in the restaurant along with the traditional Gingerbread House created by the Head Chef and his team. Don’t forget to pick up your tree to take home along with the wonderful selection of gifts in the shop.
