Behind the scenes, when the Hall is closed

Conservation team caring for items

The Hall is closed through the depths of winter, to allow the dedicated team of staff and volunteers to clean and restore. In the New Year they embark on the busiest part of their year.

With the previous year’s deep clean finished its time to begin all over again. Scaffolding is erected and the entire top floor is cleaned from top to bottom. Tapestries, textiles, paintings, beds and chairs, windows, doors and all the floors will be carefully cleaned and covered. Put to bed, at rest until the New Year. Keep an eye out our social media posts for updates and snippets from behind the scenes.

This is also the time we carry out essential maintenance work. This year we will be emptying all the furniture from the Long Gallery, removing all of the old rush matting and replacing it with new. All 166ft of it!
