Behind the scenes, when the Hall is closed

Conservation team caring for items

November sees the end of the regular opening times for the Hall, giving the Hall and the collection a chance to rest. Whilst the lower floors are decorated and opened for Christmas, the upper floor closes. But while the Hall rests the House team will swing into action as they embark on the busiest part of their year.

With the previous year’s deep clean finished its time to begin all over again. Scaffolding is erected and the entire top floor is cleaned from top to bottom. Tapestries, textiles, paintings, beds and chairs, windows, doors and all the floors will be carefully cleaned and covered. Put to bed, at rest until the New Year. Keep an eye out our social media posts for updates and snippets from behind the scenes.

This is also the time we carry out essential maintenance work. This year we will be emptying all the furniture from the Long Gallery, removing all of the old rush matting and replacing it with new. All 166ft of it!

On top of these almighty tasks the staff and volunteer teams are busy preparing the Hall for Christmas opening, which start from Saturday 18 November. Boxes and boxes of decorations will be taken out of storage. Massive 24 foot trees are installed in the Entrance Hall, along with rather more modest ones in other rooms in the Hall.
