Behind Closed Doors

Visitor admiring the tapestries at Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire

This winter experience Hardwick in a new way. Take a peek behind the door with us and uncover the unseen Hardwick. These experiences will help you discover a version of Hardwick you may have never seen before.

While the Hall may be closed for general admission, our beautiful hall will be revealing some of its secrets this January and early February.

From the 5 January visitors will be able to access a unique experience each week. Explore where you have never been before and uncover our roof and attic spaces, discover Hardwicks treasures, and witness conservation in action as it happens. In these small group tours you will hear Hardwick's secrets from our expert guides who have a wealth of knowledge on Hardwick, it's history and its collection.

Booking a place for all events is vital, as these exclusive events have a limited capacity. All experiences are subject change due to weather and building project requirements. Non-members will also require a general admission ticket in addition to the Experience ticket

Roof Experience

Climb the original steps of the North Stairs and emerge amongst the chimneys and turrets where you can experience the full, magnificent impact of Hardwick’s position on the top of the ridge overlooking the Derbyshire countryside.

400 years’ worth of Derbyshire weather have had a huge impact on the fabric of Hardwick, a huge conservation challenge we face today. All the income from the roof tours goes directly to our building project, which you can see in action on your visit today.

Attics and Treasures experience

The attics are a spot very rarely seen at Hardwick and is perhaps somewhere you may never have even considered on your visit. Home to some off-display textiles, the attics are a treasure trove for historical enthusiasts. The attics themselves have a story to tell from their creation and history, which not many get to hear.

Many of the attic's textiles have links to some of the five treasures of Hardwick. Five remarkable objects which highlight Bess of Hardwick’s impeccable taste, can be seen in our ground floor display. This special tour gives you chance to see and hear more about these astonishing objects.

Conservation in action experience  (19 -21 Jan 2022)

Our Repair and Maintenance project is well underway and into its sixth year. The need for upkeep and care of the beautiful building and particularly its soft sandstone is an ongoing endeavour to help protect the building for future generations to enjoy.

The work in progress gives visitors the unique chance to see conservation in action. See our team of experts as they work on remedial conservation, on site conservation and hear from our stonemasons as they point not just the stonework outside but inside the hall too.
