A passion for learning outdoors is at the heart of the learning offer at Hardy’s Birthplace and Thorncombe Woods. Children will get the opportunity to walk in the woods that inspired much of the writing of Thomas Hardy.

Exploring dress & livelihoods in the work of Thomas Hardy.

Venue: Hardy’s Cottage & Thorncombe Woods.

Duration: Two hours.

Price per student: £4 + VAT with an education group membership, or £6.50 + VAT without.

Curriculum: English Literature & Experiential Learning

Based on Far from the Madding Crowd, Hardy’s fourth novel and first major literary success, we explore how dress and livelihood were used to narrate rural change in his lifetime. Students will gain an insight of how Hardy used the landscapes of Dorset (Wessex) as a backdrop for his writing. Using textile and costume, they will practice skills in literature appreciation and critical inquiry
