Making a house a home - volunteering at Clouds Hill

Two volunteers talking in front of Hardy's Cottage

The small cottage near Dorchester where Lawrence of Arabia lived is charming to look at, but it’s the warm welcome of the volunteer guides that turn it from a house into a home.

National Trust is looking for additional volunteers to help us bring the unique Clouds Hill to life for visitors.

There are different roles to suit different interests, from costumed interpretation to reception duties and sharing the stories of the homes and their former owners with visitors.

Annette Joyce started as a volunteer Room Guide at Clouds Hill in 2016 and has fallen in love with this special place and her role:

‘I look forward to the days I am there as I always come away having had an enjoyable few hours sharing so many stories with visitors and fellow volunteers. It’s rewarding when people thank you for enhancing their visit, however I wonder if they know how much their visit helps me.’

Alban O’Brien is a recent volunteer for National Trust and really enjoys helping people get the most out of their visit:

‘It's a great opportunity to meet people, share my enthusiasms and learn a lot from other members of the team. Volunteering for the National Trust is fully supported and something which I would recommend without hesitation.’
