Volunteer at Hardy's Cottage and Clouds Hill

We rely on our fantastic volunteers to help bring our West Dorset properties to life for visitors. If you're interested in volunteering and would like to make a difference, we have a variety of roles to fill ready for the new season.

Hardy’s CottageClouds Hill are extraordinary places full of extraordinary things and fascinating stories. But they wouldn’t be the places they are without the people who help bring it to life. That’s why our volunteer room guides and visitor welcome assistants make such a difference - they are passionate about Thomas Hardy and T E Lawrence and their homes.

If you are interested in volunteering at Hardy's Cottage,Clouds Hill or want to find out more, please contact Martin Stephens on 01305 262538.

  • Membership & Visitor Welcome – Visitor Centre: Our volunteers are the first face the visitors see and welcome them to the site, handle admissions, shop sales and help the visitors make the most from their visit.
  • Welcome Host: Welcome Hosts make the house a home with their warm welcome and by sharing their interest in Hardy and his childhood with visitors from near and far. Literally keep the home fires burning in this humble, thatched cottage.
  • Learning Assistant: Working as part of a busy learning team, the learning volunteers help to deliver and develop our learning programme for schools, which ranges from primary activities to A Levels. Frequency depends primarily on school group bookings.

Clouds Hill

  • Cottage Visitor Experience Volunteer: A smile for everyone, and your friendliness will make every visitor to the cottage feel welcome; your enthusiasm for sharing stories of Clouds Hill will make their visit memorable.

  • Reception Visitor Experience Volunteer: This is a vital role for bringing Clouds Hill to life, for inspiring our visitors and helping them to learn more about these special places in an interesting and dynamic way.
