The Bluestocking Club Presents: Beauty and the Beast at Hatchlands Park
As part of our celebration of ‘The Accomplished Mrs Boscawen’, the Bluestocking Club are bringing the big-screen to Hatchlands. Bring the whole family to enjoy Disney's 2017 live-action version of Beauty and the Beast.
Join us in a marquee on the lawn from 2.30pm to experience the delight of a movie that marked a highpoint in Disney’s renaissance. Discover this tale of a brave young woman whose father has been imprisoned by a terrifying beast. Exchanging her freedom for her father’s safety, she’s unaware that her captor is actually a prince, altered by a magic spell.
Adapted from the traditional French fairy-tale first published in 1740, it's likely that the Bluestocking Society salons discussed this tale in their London homes. Original screenwriter Linda Woolverton wrote Belle with the intention of creating a feminist icon, helping to stem criticism of Disney over their perceived weak female characters.
The Bluestocking Club merges book club and film club with a programme of thought-provoking literary adaptations from period drama to film noir to sci-fi. The Club was launched by three friends who decided to throw off the negative connotations traditionally reserved for 'bluestockings' and instead celebrate brilliant minds, creativity and good company, just like the original bluestockings.
Belle’s love of reading and desire to encourage that love in others, cements her as the fairytale bluestocking heroine of who Fanny and her contemporaries would’ve been proud.
