The original novel by Laurence Sterne, follows a man narrating his own life story and was widely debated at the time for its quirky style, featuring long digressions and littered with double entendre. The bluestockings would very likely have read and discussed it at their salons, its bawdy humour was popular among London society.

A Cock and Bull Story, starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, adapts the original novel but throws in yet another layer, as the actors play themselves struggling to make their film. We're looking forward to an evening of lively debate about the nature of literary adaptations here at Hatchlands Park, the home of an original bluestocking.

The Bluestocking Club merges book club and film club together, creating a programme of thought-provoking literary adaptations from period drama, to film noir, to sci-fi. The club was launched by three friends who decided they'd like to celebrate brilliant minds, creativity and good company, just like their bluestocking predecessors.

Showing English and foreign language films, ranging from forgotten classics to old favourites, each one is selected for its discussable nature or interesting backstory. Screenings are introduced by an expert or super-fan and there's always plenty of stimulation to ensure free-flowing ideas post-screening.
