October plants of the month

Colours changing in the Wilderness

This month Tom has chosen the best plants to see. As autumn progresses, the garden takes on a new atmosphere.

Acer griseum can be found in the Wilderness with its distinctive bark.

The striking colour of Nerine bowdenii stands out in the Pine Circle where the planting is still a riot of colour.

Cercidiphyllum japonicum or Katsura, also known as the Toffee Apple tree is a real highlight of autumn and a must see (and smell!) by the Lower Stream. The fallen leaves release a caramel scent but it won't last much longer!

Joining the Nerine bowdenii in the Pine Circle are the delicate purple berries of the Callicarpa bodinieri var. giraldi 'Profusion'.
